AI Follow-Up Questions

Automatically generate intelligent follow-up questions that dig deeper into freeform survey responses

Updated over 2 weeks ago

AI Follow-Up Questions is a feature that uses artificial intelligence to automatically ask clarifying questions when a respondent's freeform answer could benefit from more detail. Instead of moving on to the next question, the survey intelligently probes deeper, helping you collect more actionable feedback without having to anticipate every possible response in advance.

AI Follow-Up Questions are only available if your plan includes the Research Assistant add-on. If you don't see the option in your question settings, contact our support team to learn more about upgrading.

How It Works

1. Enable AI Follow-Up Questions on a Freeform Question

Navigate to any freeform question in your survey editor and open the Advanced Options. You'll see an "AI Follow-Up Questions" checkbox. When enabled, the survey will evaluate each response in real-time and decide whether a follow-up question would help gather more useful information.

2. Respondent Submits Their Answer

When a respondent answers a freeform question with AI Follow-Up Questions enabled, their response is analyzed in real-time. The AI considers the original question, the respondent's answer, and the context of your survey to determine whether the response contains enough actionable information or could benefit from a follow-up.

3. AI Generates a Follow-Up (When Needed)

If the AI determines the response is vague or lacks specifics, it generates a short, open-ended follow-up question designed to draw out more detail.

For example:

  • If a respondent answers "The checkout process was frustrating," the AI might ask: "What specifically about the checkout was frustrating?"

  • If a respondent gives a detailed, actionable answer like "The search filter doesn't support filtering by date range," the AI recognizes no follow-up is needed and the survey continues normally.

The AI is designed to be conservative, it only asks a follow-up when the original response genuinely lacks actionable detail. Follow-up questions are always open-ended and never suggest possible answers, which helps prevent survey bias.

4. Follow-Up Appears Seamlessly in the Survey

The follow-up question is inserted directly into the survey flow, appearing as the next question after the original. From the respondent's perspective, it feels like a natural part of the survey. If no follow-up is needed, the survey simply advances to the next question as usual.

5. Up to Two Follow-Ups Per Question

The AI can ask up to two follow-up questions per original response. This allows for a conversational back-and-forth that progressively clarifies the feedback, while keeping the survey experience concise and respectful of the respondent's time.

Viewing Follow-Up Responses

Follow-up answers are stored alongside the original response in your results. When viewing an individual response, you'll see the original answer along with any follow-up questions and their answers grouped together, giving you the full context of the conversation.

Best Practices

  • Use on open-ended questions where detail matters. AI Follow-Up Questions works best on questions like "What could we improve?" or "Describe your experience" where vague answers are common and specifics are valuable.

  • Pair with other question types. Use structured questions (rating, NPS, single select) for quantitative data and freeform questions with AI Follow-Up Questions for the qualitative depth.

Data Privacy

AI Follow-Up Questions are processed with the same security standards as all your Iterate data. Your survey responses are never used to train AI models.
